When the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) San Diego Chapter announced plans to hold its 4th Annual North County Property Showcase and Mixer at the former Oak Industries Building in Carlsbad, KMA jumped at the chance to re-visit one of its designs from the past. The venue for the NAIOP Mixer was the building at 2051 Palomar Airport Road, sometimes referred to by locals as "the spaceship" because of its outreaching concrete buttresses and angled surfaces. KMA designed the now-familiar structure in 1980 as a manufacturing plant and corporate offices for use by Oak Industries, a manufacturer of cable television signal converters. The building has since had other major users and tenants, including Hughes Aircraft and Alphatec Spine, and was recently acquired by the international real estate firm Hines.
