Construction is underway on a new lifeguard tower in the La Jolla neighbourhood of San Diego. Designed by KMA Architecture & Engineering with Stronghold Engineering for the City of San Diego, Public Works Department, the La Jolla Children’s Pool Lifeguard tower will be a base for the protection of visitors to five beaches and benefit from a visibility of 270 degrees.

“Unlike KMA’s other projects, the audience for this lifeguard tower is wide-ranging as this is a high-profile area that many people will enjoy,” said Jay Janda, associate at KMA Architecture & Engineering. “We are aiming to please not only the lifeguards that will use the tower, but beach goers and La Jolla residents as well.”

The tower, designed to meet LEED standards, includes design features such as: graffiti-resistant, composite panels for the stairwell tower; anodized aluminium railings and window framing; fibre-cement siding which has the appearance of redwood; precast concrete and polished concrete block; a Bermuda roof atop the observation tower; and energy-efficient, reflective roofing for the rest of the structure.
