Renovation Brings Starbucks to Fenton Development in National City

07/06/2014
A new drive-through Starbucks Coffee location is set to open in September at Southport Commercial Center in National City, as part of a renovation being completed by the property’s owner, H.G. Fenton Co.

Officials of San Diego-based H.G. Fenton said approximately 2,000 square feet of the building at 404 Mile of Cars Way will be home to the Starbucks, with the balance of the space to be made available for other amenities.

The Starbucks is being built for certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

The company did not disclose the cost of its renovation project. Brian Gates, a commercial portfolio leader with H.G. Fenton, said the building is being redesigned to complement and add amenities to the neighborhood, considered a key entrance to National City off Interstate 5.

Officials said the center renovation, designed by KMA Architecture & Engineering, also includes eco-friendly exterior features, such as low-water-use landscaping and LED lighting. The general contractor is Dempsey Construction, and leasing is being handled by Ron Pepper and Chris Hodgman of Retail Insite.

The family-run H.G. Fenton was founded in 1906 and is headquartered in Mission Valley. The company owns, manages and develops properties throughout San Diego County, with several retail, office, industrial and apartment buildings in its portfolio.
