Buildings account for approximately 40% of world energy consumption. Approximately 75% of the world’s energy is consumed in urban areas. World energy consumption is projected to increase nearly 60% by 2030. Sustainable design involves applying fundamental principles of good architectural design to every project. Carefully applied design principles such as proper siting and orientation of a building, careful massing and design of windows and shading features, and maximizing opportunities for daylighting and natural heating, cooling and ventilation often reduce building energy consumption by 60-80%. A carefully designed sustainable building does not need to cost more than a conventional design and can return significant savings in operational costs over the life of the building. (cont.)
