KMA Dresses Up an Orchid: ResMed Building Gets New Shade Structure
The winner of the 2009 People’s Choice Orchid Award, the ResMed building, is getting dressed up with a new exterior shade structure. KMA Architecture & Engineering was retained by Allegis Development to design the new canopy for the 250,000 square foot ResMed Corporation headquarters facility, located in Kearny Mesa.
“The KMA design team chose a cantilevered tensioned fabric structure because it could be constructed without disturbing the construction currently taking place on the ResMed terrace,” said John Hilgeman, project architect for the structure. “The unique fabric also provides a modern architectural appearance to complement the current contemporary building design and features.”
Expected to be complete by midsummer of this year, designs for the structure were created in order to provide a shaded, covered area on the terrace for outdoor group functions. Intended to bring employee gatherings outside more frequently, the shade structure will accompany the elaborate drought tolerant landscaping of the property’s central park to create enjoyable, usable outdoor meeting space.
