Liberty Station Building 902, located at San Diego’s former Naval Training Center, recently achieved LEED Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). KMA Architecture & Engineering (KMA) was retained by McMillin Commercial, a division of the Corky McMillin Companies, to provide design architecture and engineering services for the $10.8 million sustainable project.

“Having received LEED Gold certification in this now thriving business, residential and green-space community really emphasizes the complete transformation Liberty Station has undergone,” said Don Blair, president of KMA. “KMA is proud to have had an active role in this renaissance having worked on phases I, II, III and IV of the Liberty Station restoration. Though it was a challenge to develop the historical look of Building 902 while implementing modern sustainable designs, it was a rewarding process and we are very pleased with the outcome.”

In order to achieve LEED Gold certification, a number of sustainable designs and techniques were incorporated. The environmentally-conscious design features include efficient plumbing fixtures to reduce water usage by 30 percent, fossil filter inserts for stormwater quality control, and high performance HVAC and lighting systems. Locally sourced materials were also used to reduce the environmental effects of processing and transportation and 10 percent of all construction materials were from recycled sources.
