KMA Architecture & Engineering (KMA) announced that construction is underway for a P-790 Special Operation Forces Combatant Crew Training Facility at the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. The project recently broke ground and is expected to be complete in Dec. 2010 with design and construction concepts to meet LEED Silver standards.
KMA was retained by general contractor Barnhart, Inc. to design the two-story, $8.6 million project. The 35,645 square-foot concrete masonry and steel frame building will house high bay boat storage and maintenance for up to eighteen boats, as well as administration, classrooms, conference, instructor support, gear storage, medical exam rooms, shower and lockers, parts storage and weapons vaults. The building will bring together several departments for the training of Naval boat operators and boat maintenance.
“KMA worked closely with Barnhart in creating a design to deliver a building that not only addresses the requirements of the base but also supports environmental needs through sustainable construction,” said Don Blair, president of KMA. “Our history working with numerous government projects aided in adequately tackling designs for the specific functions the training facility will provide.”
